Living with dementia can sometimes make it difficult to explain who you are, where you live, or who to contact in an emergency. Dementia Jersey has partnered with MiCode, a UK based healthcare and technology company, to offer a free MiCode to people in Jersey who are living with dementia. It is an innovative new tool which allows information to be available quickly either in an emergency, or when help and support may be needed.

MiCode will be the data controller, and responsible for all data provided by you when you sign up for the tool.

When you click ‘Send me a MiCode’, Dementia Jersey will be given your name and address to allow them to arrange for the MiCode pack to be delivered or collected, and provide support, if you need it, when registering the MiCode.

What is MiCode?

MiCode is a secure digital medical ID system that gives emergency services, healthcare professionals, and carers instant access to important health information when it matters most. It is designed for people with medical conditions, disabilities, allergies, dementia, mental health conditions, or anyone who may struggle to communicate in an emergency.

MiCode can be worn or carried as a bracelet, keyring, pendant, card, sticker, or displayed on a phone, helping ensure vital information is always available.

The MiCode product has been designed to provide peace of mind for users and their families by ensuring that important information is accessible in emergencies or when help and support is needed.

How does MiCode work?

It allows you to create a secure online profile and add important information such as:

  • Medical conditions
  • Allergies and medications
  • Emergency contacts
  • Other key health information

Information is linked to a unique QR code.

In an emergency, the QR code can be scanned using a smartphone, allowing healthcare professionals or carers to quickly access vital information.

MiCode can also:

  • Alert emergency contacts
  • Translate information into different languages
  • Be easily updated anytime so details stay current and accurate.

Who is MiCode Ltd?

MiCode Ltd is a UK company established and run by healthcare professionals whose lived experiences helped to guide their approach.

What is the relationship between Dementia Jersey and MiCode?

Dementia Jersey has worked closely with the MiCode team to review the product and assess its fit for Jersey residents and is now pleased to be able to offer it free of charge for those in our community who are living with dementia.

MiCode is a separate company and choosing to register with them for a free MiCode means you will enter into a relationship directly with them via a page dedicated to Jersey residents.

How do I request a MiCode?

You can request a MiCode by clicking the green ‘Send me a MiCode’. Once you register your interest, MiCode will provide Dementia Jersey with your name and contact details in order for a MiCode pack to be sent to your home address or collected from Dementia Jersey offices.

When you receive your pack, it will contain a unique 8 digit code which is required when completing the registration process for use of the MiCode.

Why am I being offered a MiCode?

Dementia Jersey are offering anyone living with Dementia in Jersey and their carers access to this technology for free.

What information can I store on MiCode?

You can store your medical information, emergency contacts and support information. Most of this information will be PIN protected and you can set the 6 digit PIN number. You will need to share the PIN number with your emergency contact so that they can provide access to this information if needed in an emergency situation.

What happens when someone scans the MiCode?

The person scanning the QR code will see your first name, photo and your emergency name and contact phone number, as well as any other secondary emergency contacts you have added to your profile. Your emergency contacts will also receive an email to say that your MiCode has been scanned and this will include a map showing the location where your code has been scanned. They will have the option of sharing a secure PIN code with the person who has scanned your code who can use it to access any additional information you have added to your profile (e.g. medical information).

What if someone scans my code when I don't want them to?

Only minimal information is shown without a PIN, for example your first name, phone number and emergency contact number.

How do I set it up?

You can register the MiCode yourself and create your profile or you can ask a family member or friend to help. You can also request support from Dementia Jersey by emailing info@dementia.je or phoning 01534 723519.

What if my details change or I wish to update my profile?

You can log in and update your information at any time. Please keep your details up to date and make sure your emergency contact details are current. Your primary emergency contact number will appear to call when your MiCode is scanned. Therefore, if you need to change your emergency contact, we recommend you update the primary emergency contact details rather than add a new contact

Can I add more than one emergency contact?

Yes you can add multiple emergency contacts and they would all use the same PIN. They will receive an email and a text message notification when they are added and will also be notified whenevery time your MiCode is scanned.

Can the PIN be reset once used?

Yes you can log in and amend your PIN.

Is MiCode secure?

Your information is held securely by MiCode. For further information about the security controls and data protection protocols, please see our Privacy Policy.

Dementia Jersey do not have any access to your personal data.

Can I use MiCode when I'm out and about (e.g., off-island) or on holiday?

Yes, you can still use your MiCode when you are off-island and your emergency contact will continue to be notified every time the code is scanned.

Does MiCode work if there is no phone signal or WiFi?

The person scanning the QR code will need WiFi or mobile data access to be able to see your emergency contact number.

What if I lose my bracelet/keyring/sticker?

You can replace lost items without changing your profile details. Please email info@micode.uk.

Can I close my account if I no longer wish to use it?

Yes, you can login and close your account. This will deactivate the QR code immediately. If you change your mind and wish to reactivate your MiCode, you can do so by contacting the email address on the MiCode website.
